Why Slashdot is quickly making itself irrelevant...

Firstly, I should mention, I do not have a slashdot account, and have no intention of ever signing up for one. I just don't see the point.

Last week, I began noticing some odd things on Slashdot... some of the stories that someone (who, I don't know) decided I would not be interested in, were only listed as titles instead of the full summary other stories get.

Missing articles

Figure: Missing Articles

I imagine, if I had an account I'd be able to configure which of these I get and which I don't. But I don't really want to do that. I haven't yet found a good filtering system that can detect my mood and change my filter accordingly.

So this was a little annoying... but then this morning I see this...

What

Figure: What?

Could it be that slashdot, the great bastion of flames against that other hated free registration site has sold out? Did it sell out years ago and I just never noticed?

Slashdot has long been in my bookmarks because it gave me news on a variety of topics that all mattered, and were interesting to me. I could browse the home page and know within 5 or 10 minutes current events in the technology community. Now, the rigamarole and effort associated with it has caused slashdot to exceed it's alotted bullshit to benefit ratio.

Time to look for alternatives .
