Remember our diminutive friends...
So the gadget du jour here ar WWDC is the Sidekick 2. I bought one myself a couple weeks ago, and have taken this opportunity to really put it through its paces. I've done all my email, instant messaging, and even this blog posting through the device. By using this device, which goes through T-Mobile's email server I don't have to worry about my email being sniffed by the conference participants and I also don't have to change my SMTP server on my laptop.
Its amazing how many other people have Sidekicks here too! If Apple ever does make a handheld device, they'd do well to imitate the Sidekick to gain a fast and loyal following.
As part of this experiment, I'm using BlogLines as my RSS reader. The Sidekick is lacking an RSS reader and bloglines is available in a very Sidekick friendly web page format that works extremely well. I thought I'd hate it - being horribly spoiled as I am with NetNewsWire and other fat client RSS readers. But I don't. It works very well and does exactly what I need. I tried some RSS clients that email the feeds to you but it didn't fit the whole only-on-when-I-want-it thing.
A lot of the feeds look fine on the Sidekick, but I wanted to point out to folks that they should realize that its not just desktops with big screens that view their pages and they should insure their pages degrade nicely. A good example of this is Slashdot . I'm pleased that the DeVoeSquared.com home page degrades nicely and looks quite good. But this blog needs some work, so when I'm back home, I'll probably be spending some time tweaking the theme here.
So the takeaway here is, remember our diminutive friends and make sure your site looks good on browsers that don't support big screens. Its worth it.
